Ever Secretly Wished You Could Be A Motivational Speaker?

Helping others is a virtue many people have. However, sometimes they don’t have an outlet for it even if they want to. For them, they want their identity to be defined as someone who’s ready to lend a helping hand when the situation calls for it.

The famous English writer Charles Dickens once said, “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another”.

Do you have a passion for helping others? Do you want to lighten the burdens of other people by giving them advice or sharing inspiring words? Do you want to motivate others so they can live a better life?

Helping people dramatically improve their lives by using only your words can be extremely rewarding. Imagine being able to change people’s lives with no other resource other than words. As we’re all aware, when used improperly, words can hurt, demotivate, humiliate, hinder, or harm. But when used positively, they can heal, inspire, encourage, empower, or enrich someone’s life.

I know for myself that using words to improve the lives of others is truly rewarding. However, if you think that you must be a famous person or that you have to be wildly outgoing in terms of your personality to make a real difference and a living as a speaker, let me give you some good news: nothing can be further from the truth.

It All Starts With One Great Speech

What’s the secret? It all starts with crafting just one great speech. That’s actually where it all begins. And if I gave you the opportunity right now to speak in front of 100 people or log into a Zoom call and there are 100 people online waiting for you, what would you talk about? What would set your soul on fire? What would you most want to share or discuss?

If you’re not sure how to answer those questions, it only means you don’t have a talk prepared and ready to go, so that opportunity will never turn into success for you. A favourite quote of mine states that “when preparation meets opportunity, it produces the offspring we call luck”.

Sadly, most people are unprepared for inspirational speaking opportunities. And if you’re one of those people who is not sure what to talk about, then you might want to start by thinking about what your message could be.

What would you love people to know about their lives, or about any type of particular topic for that matter? I often imagine this scenario: I’m walking down the street and you are walking in the opposite direction; then we meet each other in the middle of the street, and I can just immediately say one thing to you about your life. One sentence is all I’m allowed to say to you.

What about you? What would be that one sentence that you could tell me about life or whatever topic it is that lights you up? If you know what that topic is, quite often, you’ve got a point that you can expand on. If it lights you up, I’m sure you can say so much more about it.

Or you can think about it this way: Let’s say it’s your last day on Earth. If you could utter some profound final words of wisdom before you leave the planet, what would those words of wisdom be?

“What about you, Ben? What would be your last words?” is probably the question in your mind now.

For me, my entire world is summed up by 3 words: Live your love.

If there was only one sentence that I could say to you, it would be that. In fact, that’s the message of our organisation. You’ll see it on our website, on our manuals, and on our brochures.

So think about that. If it were your last day on earth and you could only utter a few final words, what would those words be? If you find that questions like this are too big, then may I suggest that you start with an aha moment. When people are trying to work out what we’re meant to talk about, I promise you that you will have some aha moments throughout your life.

For example, you might be reading a book or watching a documentary and then just go, “Oh, wow” or “Wow, I didn’t know that!” Or you might learn a really cool thing and you just can’t get it out of your head and you think about it for weeks and weeks. Well, imagine if you could share that in a room with 100 people. I’m quite sure they’ll also think about it for weeks and weeks and weeks.

Once again, being a motivational or inspirational speaker really just starts with one great speech. And you don’t have to spend tons of time trying to design the content so it’s ready to roll off your tongue and deliver these 5-day experiences. You just need to start small and grow.

How small? Well, you can get started with a 5-minute speech. That’s it—a 5-minute talk about something that lights you up, an aha moment, some words of wisdom, or whatever it may be. You can just start there.

Becoming A Motivational Speaker

Once you have a speech that genuinely motivates people, guess what? You’ve technically become a motivational speaker! You’re in the game now. You’ve begun the process of becoming a motivational speaker.

Too simplistic, you say? However, it’s true. In case you don’t realise it, everything you want to do in life is a series of small steps frequently taken. Anyone can be a motivational or inspirational speaker. There’s nothing special about motivational or inspirational speakers. They’re just people like you and me—people who found something cool and started talking. What’s the difference between you and them? They’re more prepared. That’s it.

Once you deliver the right speech, you’re going to find that people will start coming up to you and asking you when your next talk is so they can bring some friends or their team along. Before you know it, you’ve started growing as a motivational speaker. It only starts with one speech.

As I mentioned earlier, when opportunity meets preparation, success is inevitable. How do I know this? Because this is exactly what happened to me. When I got started, nobody knew who I was.
