"Ben Harvey was once in debt, fat and suffering from a mental illness. Today he runs a million-dollar enterprise." That was the hilarious tagline from an article The Sydney Morning Herald wrote about me.
Now, the funny thing is… it’s 100% true!
So today I wanted to share with you how I turned my life around, and (if you need to) how you can turn yours around too.
Back in 2002, I found myself coming into my fifth year of chronic depression. I was unemployed for most of that time, heavily overweight, and massively in debt.
All the medication that the doctors had me on wasn't doing anything to change my situation in life.
I decided to get a job in recruitment to get out of debt, and also to get out of the house. I wanted to help people live a more fulfilling life.
I thought that maybe I could have an impact if I actually started to get people jobs that they enjoyed.
After about four years of recruitment, I realised that I wasn't passionate about the industry, and I needed to make some type of big change.
In 2005, I borrowed up to the absolute maximum limit on my credit card and used all of that money to invest in learning about personal development, coaching, and business in general.
When I did that, a whole new world opened to me. I was still about $137,000 in debt, and something really had to change. What I realised is that whatever got me to this point in my life was not going to get me any further.
In fact, there's a saying that I read in a book, and it said, "Whatever got you here, won't get you there." I realised that I had to upgrade my knowledge. I had to change something. I really had to do something different. I had to learn something new in order to move forward.
Now, in 2006, I actually opened up my coaching business. In 2009, I launched a company called "Authentic Education" with my business partner, Cham Tang. In less than four years, we were fortunate enough to go on and win a BRW Fast Starters Award. In 2015, we were awarded the BRW Fast 100 Award, which recognized the top 100 companies that achieved the largest year on year growth.
3 Essentials For Success
In order for people to be successful, whether they are trying to turn their life around or not, I believe that they need three essential things:
1. Have A Big Vision
The way you know that you've got a big vision is if you're passionate about it.
In fact, passion is the single most important ingredient when it comes to being successful.
If you have passion, then you are literally half way there.
2. Get Many Mentors
Don't expect to do all of this by yourself. A lot of people out there think that it's a solo sport. Life is not a solo sport. It's a team sport.
You can go far on your own, but you'll find that you can go much farther as a team.
So, find great teachers and mentors, and formulate your success team.
The idea is this: Have a mentor when it comes to money. Have mentor when it comes to public speaking. Have a mentor when it comes to relationships. Have a mentor when it comes to health, to fitness. I mean, I think you get the idea. Have a mentor for everything.
3. Little Action Steps
A lot of people think that to be successful, you need to take some giant leap from where you are to where you want to be. But success is a process, not an outcome. To be successful, you need to take actions that build momentum over time, then continually refine those actions until you get there.
Stubbornness = Success
What I know is stubbornness is one of the most incredible traits you can have to be success, because if you are stubborn, you'll continue taking these little actions and you'll continue to refine them until you make it. If you consider yourself to be a little bit stubborn, then I've got some good news for you. You are bound to be successful.
It's Not About You
If you're already in business or you want to start a business, always remember that it's not about you. This is about making the lives of your clients better in some way by solving meaningful problems for them.
My success tip is this around business: Stop thinking about yourself and start focusing on changing people's lives, and you will absolutely go out there and make it happen.
I hope sharing this not only resonates with you, but actually shows you exactly how to turn your life around. The key to all of this is to invest in yourself. I heard a great comment the other day, and someone said this:
"If you're going to go and save a deposit to buy a house, you're better off getting all of that money you would have spent on that deposit, and investing it into the most important real estate in the world. And that real estate is the real estate between your ears."
Education truly is the key that will set you free.
I hope this helps. A lot of people asked me about what I did to turn my life around, and that's exactly what I did. I invested in myself. I got the education and I put it into action.
