Today I wanted to discuss a little four letter word that people really have a poor definition of. And it's a four letter word that can quite often can be the thing that holds people back from achieving all the success they deserve in life.
More importantly, if you're looking at becoming a coach, or you're already a coach, this four letter word can be responsible for you changing the lives of thousands, if not millions of people. Or, changing the lives of no one at all.
And this four letter word is sale.
Nothing actually takes place until a sale is made. So if, I don't actually sell you the benefits of coaching... if I don't actually sell you the new belief systems... if I don't actually sell you how to actually to go out there and transform your life, then unfortunately nothing actually takes place.
I ask this in rooms full of people all over Australia, and throughout the world. And, quite often we get a whole range of ideas:
"Selling or a salesperson is a dodgy, manipulative, con-artist."
"Someone that will say whatever they need you to hear, in order to get the money off you. "
We get all these definitions, over, and over, and over again. The problem is, that is not the definition of a salesperson. That is the definition of a con-artist.
And, unfortunately what we do inside our minds, some people out there, they combine the traits of a con-artist and they marry across this concept called selling.
Selling by definition, is “the ability to improve the condition of somebody's life.” Anytime you increase the quality of somebody's life, you are in fact making a sale.
Now think about this for a second. Imagine you just watched a really cool movie, like it's the best movie ever, and you loved the movie.
And, you know that one of your friends loves this type of genre, or film.
You know that your friend loves this type of film. You just watched the film. It's a brilliant film. The next time you catch up with your friend, I know what you're going to do. I know what you're going to do. You're going to tell your friend, how good that film is.
In fact, you are going to sell that movie to your friend. Why? Because, you know that your friend loves that kind of film, and you know that when your friend goes to that film, it's going to improve the quality of their life while they're watching that film.
They're going to enjoy the film, have a great experience, and you're going to have an impact on them enjoying that experience.
Whether you like it or not, you sold your friend that film. Were you manipulative, and lying, and conning etc? You weren't doing any of those things. What you were doing is something that we refer to as caring. Because you care so much for your friend, you went out of your way to influence them to watch that film.
Similarly let's just say that you go to this incredible restaurant, or what you thought was an incredible restaurant. It was billed as the best thing that you would ever get, the most amazing food out there. And, you got to this restaurant, and it is terrible. The food is disgusting, there are cockroaches running around. I mean, it is just gross!
Tomorrow you find out a dear friend of yours is going to the exact same restaurant.
Question: what do you do about it? Just sit there and not say anything? Or, do you go out of your way to make sure your friend never eats at that restaurant? If you're anything like me, you will go out of your way sure that your friend does not eat at that restaurant.
Now why are you doing that? Are you doing that because you want to try and manipulate them? Are you doing that because you want to con them? No, you're doing that because you care about them.
One, of the most important things that I ever learned after going through a deeply spiritual journey, doing a lot of energy healing in my time, and then going on to become a coach, is: selling equals caring.
That's all it is. Selling is just caring spelt differently.
In the business world they can't use the word caring.
Imagine this, we go into our Monday meeting, and we're sitting around the table and the manager says, "Alright, Jenny how much caring did you do last week?" And Jenny goes, "Well, I did 17 carings on Friday, 12 carings on Tuesday, and I did a whole, bunch of cold caring on Monday."
You can appreciate that the word caring doesn't make sense in the business sense. So instead we use the word sales. I made five sales on Monday, three sales on Tuesday, eight sales on Wednesday, 17 sales on Friday.
In the business world we have to come up with a word to define caring. And, that word is selling.
When you think about it like this, inside your connection with your friends, inside your intimate relationships that you have with people, inside those moments, the art of selling is simply known as caring.
When we take away that connection that we have with our close friends, and we take that same level of love and caring into a marketplace, we call it selling. And until we turn and change the internal definition that we use for that word selling, we use for the word sale, or sell, or to make a sale, unfortunately, we'll never take the action to go out there and change people's lives.
Think about this for a second: If inside your mind your definition of selling is to con people, to manipulate, to have the gift of the gab, to sell ice to the Eskimos, and so on.. If that's your definition of selling, then the question is... will you ever go out of your way to make a sale? And, the answer is no.
Because to sell means that you'll actually live up to the definition of being manipulative, and conning, and so on. Right?
So, until we change the definition inside our mind of what selling actually is, we'll never do the one thing responsible for changing people's lives.
When your friend went to watch that movie that you recommended you made a sale. When your friend didn't go to that restaurant that was terrible you made a sale.
See, that's what it's all about, selling equals caring.
I want you to write down 100 times: "selling equals caring" so you can wire it into your mind and body. So that the next time you go to make a sale you realise what it actually is.
It's the art form of improving the condition of someone's life.
What could be a better thing to sell than something like coaching, which by definition is designed to do only one thing: to help people get results and improve the quality of their lives so they're living true to their fullest potential.
I hope this has helped. I know it helped me significantly in my life to really reframe and redefine what selling meant inside my mind and body so I could go out of my way to care for as many complete strangers as possible in the form of selling them things that improve the quality of their life.
