I often hear people ask "Can I make a living doing what I love most in life?".
The answer is yes. There are literally millions of people out there doing it every day.
The real question is: "Can you imagine if instead of making a living doing what you love, you made a fortune?"
You see, most people don't believe you can make money doing what you love. They believe it's either be rich or be happy.
If you are reading this article, then chances are you know you can do both. Not only that, many people believe the ONLY way you can become seriously wealthy is by following your passion. After all "People don’t buy WHAT you do they buy WHY you do it".
The 3 people below agree too. Although they have very different styles to life and business, they all agree on what you have probably heard many times before...do what you love.
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
- Steve Jobs
"What I know is, if you do work that you love, and work that fulfils you, the rest will come. I truly believe the reason I've been so financially successful is because my focus has never been on the money."
- Oprah Winfrey
"You have to love what you do. Without passion, great success is hard to come by. An entrepreneur will have tough times if he or she isn't passionate about what they're doing. People who love what they're doing don't give up. It's never even a consideration. It's a pretty simple formula."
- Donald Trump
1. Find Your Passion
For some this is easy. For others, it's not an easy step. It may take some time to think about it but the questions below can definitely help you get started:
1. What comes easy to you but harder to others?
2. What do I enjoy doing for the sake of it?
3. How can I be of service to others?
Keep brainstorming as many answers as you can think of. Don't have an unrealistic expectation for this process to take 5 minutes. This is your life we are talking about! So investing few hours over a period of time is definitely worth it.
2. Turning Your Passion Into Profit
Most people believe passion doesn't pay the bills. After all, how can I make money watching TV or by going shopping?
What they are missing, are these 3 simple steps:
1. Passion - What you love doing. Eg. Women's clothes
2. Problems - In the area of your passion, what problems do people face? Eg. Not knowing what to wear, how to style themselves, look good on a budget.
3. Product - The solutions to these problems will form the basis of your product.
It's also important to realize that some work will be involved. Even the movie critic who "watches movies all day" will still have 10% of their job they don't like. But this sure beats disliking 90% of your job.
3. Package Yourself For Wealth
Remember, most people don't want one-off solutions for a particular problem. They want a "path". The good news is, giving them a path and the steps to achieve financial freedom means more business for you also.
Packaging yourself for wealth means putting all your solutions into a package. Eg. The Ultimate Women's Style Package.
You can choose a variety of delivery methods which suit you best also. Eg. Online delivery, Telephone Coaching, Face-to-face workshops.
4. The Business Side Of Things
If somebody is a great cook, does that mean they can open a successful restaurant? Of course not, the food is only part of it.
Remember: To be successful, you need to learn many facets of the business, including marketing, money management and sales...and if you have "stuff" around sales, just know that "you can't serve people without selling".
The biggest problem I see with people is that they are unwilling to charge what they are worth because they love doing it or because they are not perfect at it yet. The solution to this is to be fully sold out at a lower price. Then when you get too busy, increase your price. Don't worry, the market will decide what is a fair price, not you.
5. The Courage To Niche
If you saw a person's business card that said "Massage Therapy and Life Coaching" would you go to them for either of those? Don't fall into the trap of being all things to all people.
"The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe.”
Although it may be ok to be more broad when you first start, your ultimate goal should be to carve out a niche for yourself where you are the expert and people come to you.
